Researchers have found that an inflammatory molecule called interleukin-33 (IL-33) has a significant role in the development of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease after viral infection, leading to overproduction of mucus in the airways and expression of other COPD implicated genes. This discovery could lead to potential new therapeutic strategies.
